BRIGHTON RATINGS: Jason Steele 7 – Couldn’t stop Ighalo skipping past him in first half but United striker could only find side netting. No chance with any of the goals. Nearly spilled after saving Fred free-kick but recovered to smother ball. Did well to stop Dalot grabbing late goal. PA

Ben White - 6: Will be disappointed to have played McTominay onside from the free-kick that supplied United's opening goal. Turned inside out by Lingard late on only for the United player to fire wide. AP

Lewis Dunk - 6: Brighton talismanic captain is the heartbeat of Potter’s Brighton but was undone by the class of Mata for United‘s second goal. He nearly gifted United another chance trying to play out from the back soon after. PA

Dan Burn - 7: Booked for clumsy foul on Mata just before the break. Resulting free-kick led to McTominay goal. EPA

Joel Veltman - 6: Summer signing from Ajax was booked trying to stop a flying Rashford 10 minutes from time. Pogba cracked resulting free-kick into top corner via slight deflection off the Dutchman. AP

Jayson Molumby - 6: Determined tackling from the Irish midfielder helped set up good chance for Trossard in second half. Played his part as Brighton kept United on their toes until late goals. EPA

Pascal Gross - 6: Talented player who didn’t influence the game like he can. Did supply good cross for Trossard only for Henderson to produce world-class save. Blazed over the bar from distance late on. Reuters

Bernardo - 6: Almost clean through in first half only to be denied by fine Bailley challenge. Had his moments down the left but sloppy in possession at times. EPA

Alireza Jahanbakhsh – 7: Forced good save out of Henderson with curling shot after 25 minutes. Cracked another chance over the bar minutes before United’s opener. Picked up injury that forced him off straight after break. EPA

Viktor Gyokeres - 5: Swedish attacker made little impact and was hooked just after the hour. EPA

Alexis Mac Allister - 7: Caused United a few problems. Beautiful lay-off to set up Jahanbakhsh chance midway through first half. Scooped a shot just over the bar after dangerous run 10 minutes before the break. Wasted free-kick in great position by shooting instead of crossing into box 10 minutes after half-time. EPA

SUBS: Neil Maupay (On for Jahanbakhsh 50’) 6: Little goal threat from the French attacker. PA

Leandro Trossard – (On for Gyokeres 63’) 7: Made instant impact when he came on. Denied a goal by brilliant Henderson save. Dancing feet made life difficult for United’s defence. AP

Max Sanders (On for Molumby 83’) NA.

MANCHESTER UNITED RATINGS: Dean Henderson - 7: One quality first half save, one superb one in the second from Trossard, the man who can’t score against United. Second cup game in a week for United, second clean sheet. Doing fine. EPA

Diogo Dalot - 6: Rare chance for the Portuguese right back. Lovely cross for Pogba to head at goal. Late chance blocked after being set up by Mata. Grew into game. AFP

Eric Bailly - 8: Another convincing away performance and in the League Cup to help earn more trust from his manager. Attacked Mata’s ball - like goalscorer. EPA

Victor Lindelof - 6: Under pressure for drifting and poor positioning in games, but while he wasn’t as assured as Bailly, improved in game. Booked. AP

Brandon Williams - 6: Constantly encouraged from the bench, the Mancunian was steadier and calmer than he has been. Always bountiful energy about him but not overly effective going forward. PA

Scott McTominay - 7: Firm, free, well timed header to score from Mata. Five goals last season. Feisty in a positive way, passes well. Reuters

Fred - 7: Pushed and pressed. Tidy. Brings balance, seldom loses the ball. EPA

Juan Mata - 9: Man of the match last week in the League Cup and the same this. Incredible work rate and significant influence on game. Perfect ball in beyond flat back line to set up the opening goal. Then scored the second – his 50th United goal - to confirm victory, cleverly passing the ball into the net when it looked like he’d shoot with the other foot. AP

Donny Van De Beek - 7: His agent isn’t happy that he’s a substitute in league games, but the Dutchman isn’t yet pulling up trees when he does play. Got better as the game went on. Clever flick into the path of Mata for his second goal and awareness and off the ball movement. His links with Mata troubled Brighton all night. Getty

Daniel James - 4: James 4. Very little impact on the game. Disappointing. EPA

Odion Ighalo - 4: Excellent chance in first half, then the first United substitute. He’s different from United’s other strikers, but it’s a struggle for the Nigerian when he gets rare minutes and it’s hard to see where he’ll get more before his loan ends in January. EPA

SUBS: Paul Pogba (On for James 69) - 7: His first goal of the season ten minutes later with a deflected free kick. Or so he thought as he celebrated. Given as an own goal. PA

Marcus Rashford (On for Ighalo 69) - 6: Didn’t have the same impact as last week, but part of United’s strong finish. EPA
