“I think this can be totally different than when I was there the last time,” said Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool must hope so. They go to Camp Nou for Wednesday's Champions League semi-final. Their talisman has been before.
“It is a nice stadium, a historic stadium and for me it was a great experience to play there. It was my first time, my only time and my last time so far so I am looking forward to playing them again,” Van Dijk elaborated.
It was December 2013 and the Champions League group stages when Van Dijk anchored the Celtic defence. They lost 6-1. Van Dijk nevertheless emerged with reputation enhanced. A montage of clips has emerged, showing him making a goal-line clearance, several brilliantly-timed last-ditch challenges and a few more vital interventions; but for him, Barcelona could have got double figures.
“I saw some videos as well but if you are losing 6-1, as a defender, you can’t say you had a good game,” Van Dijk countered. “The good thing for me personally was I took a lot of experience from that night.”
Just over five years later, his career has progressed at a remarkable rate. Then he was a few months into his Celtic career, a £2.6 million signing from Groningen who would not even make the Netherlands' 2014 World Cup squad. Now he captains his country and, at £75 million, is the costliest defender in footballing history.
His rise was reflected when he was presented with the PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday; if Van Dijk is the best footballer in England, he is in little doubt who the finest on the planet is. The Dutchman did not mention Lionel Messi by name; he did not need to. "I think he is the best player in the world, I have said that before," he added.
It will be a first meeting for irresistible object and immovable force. A hamstring injury sidelined Messi in December 2013 – Neymar, with a hat-trick, took on the role of tormentor in chief – but, having scored his 598th Barcelona goal in Saturday's title-clinching win over Levante, he is available now.
One of the stand-out statistics of Van Dijk’s remarkable season is that no one has dribbled past him in the Premier League. Messi has spent the most garlanded of careers jinking past defenders on solo runs of speed and skill. Van Dijk downplayed the suggestion that it boils down to him against Messi.
“You see how we play and how we defend,” he explained. “We don’t defend one v one, we defend all together and we attack all together as well so we will see. We will be ready.” The rest of Barcelona’s front three consists of the Liverpool alumni Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho, so they can testify that the Spanish champions have multiple threats.
“It is not only him, the whole team has a lot of quality,” Van Dijk added. “But we have also a very good team so we can compete there as well so it is not like we are going there for a holiday or something.”
Liverpool, who are unbeaten in their four previous trips to Camp Nou, are yet to lose a two-legged European tie under Jurgen Klopp and are looking to reach successive Champions League finals for the first time since 1985.
“Barcelona is one of the best teams in the world but anything can happen,” Van Dijk added. “It is going to be unbelievably tough. You need to be ready for problems and we will be and hopefully we can get a good result we can take with us back to Anfield.”

SUNDERLAND 2002-03
No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.

Until Derby came along, Sunderland’s total of 15 points was the Premier League’s record low. They made it until May and their final home game before winning at the Stadium of Light while they lost a joint record 29 of their 38 league games.
HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19
Joined Derby as the only team to be relegated in March. No striker scored until January, while only two players got more assists than goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The mid-season appointment Jan Siewert was to end his time as Huddersfield manager with a 5.3 per cent win rate.
ASTON VILLA 2015-16
Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.
FULHAM 2018-19
Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

How to come clean about financial infidelity

What is Folia?
Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal's new plant-based menu will launch at Four Seasons hotels in Dubai this November. A desire to cater to people looking for clean, healthy meals beyond green salad is what inspired Prince Khaled and American celebrity chef Matthew Kenney to create Folia. The word means "from the leaves" in Latin, and the exclusive menu offers fine plant-based cuisine across Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Bahrain and, soon, Dubai.
Kenney specialises in vegan cuisine and is the founder of Plant Food Wine and 20 other restaurants worldwide. "I’ve always appreciated Matthew’s work," says the Saudi royal. "He has a singular culinary talent and his approach to plant-based dining is prescient and unrivalled. I was a fan of his long before we established our professional relationship."
Folia first launched at The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills in July 2018. It is available at the poolside Cabana Restaurant and for in-room dining across the property, as well as in its private event space. The food is vibrant and colourful, full of fresh dishes such as the hearts of palm ceviche with California fruit, vegetables and edible flowers; green hearb tacos filled with roasted squash and king oyster barbacoa; and a savoury coconut cream pie with macadamia crust.
In March 2019, the Folia menu reached Gulf shores, as it was introduced at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where it is served at the Bay View Lounge. Next, on Tuesday, November 1 – also known as World Vegan Day – it will come to the UAE, to the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach and the Four Seasons DIFC, both properties Prince Khaled has spent "considerable time at and love".
There are also plans to take Folia to several more locations throughout the Middle East and Europe.
While health-conscious diners will be attracted to the concept, Prince Khaled is careful to stress Folia is "not meant for a specific subset of customers. It is meant for everyone who wants a culinary experience without the negative impact that eating out so often comes with."

New process leads to panic among jobseekers
As a UAE-based travel agent who processes tourist visas from the Philippines, Jennifer Pacia Gado is fielding a lot of calls from concerned travellers just now. And they are all asking the same question.
“My clients are mostly Filipinos, and they [all want to know] about good conduct certificates,” says the 34-year-old Filipina, who has lived in the UAE for five years.
Ms Gado contacted the Philippines Embassy to get more information on the certificate so she can share it with her clients. She says many are worried about the process and associated costs – which could be as high as Dh500 to obtain and attest a good conduct certificate from the Philippines for jobseekers already living in the UAE.
“They are worried about this because when they arrive here without the NBI [National Bureau of Investigation] clearance, it is a hassle because it takes time,” she says.
“They need to go first to the embassy to apply for the application of the NBI clearance. After that they have go to the police station [in the UAE] for the fingerprints. And then they will apply for the special power of attorney so that someone can finish the process in the Philippines. So it is a long process and more expensive if you are doing it from here.”
