History will have to be created if Godolphin wants to win the 20th running of the Dubai World Cup.
No horse has won the US$10 million (Dh36.7m) race twice and African Story has the daunting task of becoming the first to achieve it in a field that includes California Chrome, the American Horse of the Year, and Epiphaneia, the Japan Cup winner.
Saeed bin Suroor, the Godolphin trainer, has two entered, with African Story in the all-blue colours of the UAE Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s Dubai Racing Operation, and Prince Bishop in the silks of the Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed.

African Story is drawn in gate three and Prince Bishop in one, but Bin Suroor thinks the draw will matter little in a small field of nine runners.
“A good start and a good position early in the race is what would matter,” said the Emirati, who has won the Dubai World Cup a record six times.
“African Story won this race on Tapeta last year and the Maktoum Challenge Round 3 on dirt last time out.
“After he won last year, it was always the plan to bring him back for the Dubai World Cup.
“The surface he races on doesn’t make any real difference to him as good horses handle any surface but we want to try and keep both our horses out of the kickback as much as possible.
“African Story has a good turn of foot and can take any position in the race for James Doyle.
“Prince Bishop had a little problem in the past when he jumped from the stalls but I hope that he can start better this time. He is tough and has done well this year.
“He was close to African Story on his latest outing and worked well earlier this week. I am happy with him and we will talk to William Buick about keeping him in a handy position this time.”
Doyle, who was onboard African Story in both starts this season, preferred a wider draw as he felt most of the speed to be on the outside, which would be a worry for him.
“It was a bit of a shock to African Story the first time he ran on dirt, with the kickback and all that. Though you must remember it was his first start since winning the Dubai World Cup last year and he needs the race a lot,” Doyle said. “He adapted better the second time and it was good to see him get his act together on the dirt. I was pleased with the performance in the Maktoum Challenge and he battled well – it gives a lot more confidence going into the World Cup.”
Buick said: “We have all seen Prince Bishop this year – he has run very well in defeat both times and should have won both times, no question about it, as he gave himself a lot to do.”
Godolphin has only eight runners across five races, including the Dubai World Cup.
Ahzeemah and Marzocco race in the Dubai Gold Cup, Maftool and Sir Fever in the UAE Derby, Ahtoug in the Al Quoz Sprint and True Story in the Dubai Sheema Classic.
Their best hopes of racking up a winner on the night are likely to come from the juveniles Maftool and Sir Fever.
Maftool bounced back to get the better of Mubtaahij in the Group 3 UAE 2000 Guineas to avenge his defeat to Mike de Kock’s runner in the trials after missing the break.
“I am pleased with the horse as he has progressed since his last race. The longer distance of the UAE Derby will suit him,” Bin Suroor said.
Charlie Appleby trains Sir Fever, who was beaten for the first time in 10 starts behind Mubtaahij. “We have got the headgear on him just to help us a bit more. He is a big, lengthy galloper and the headgear will help his concentration and keep him focused on the race,” he said.
“William and I learnt a lot about him on his one start in Dubai, getting to know his strengths. He has been an easy horse to train, but without seeing him at the races first hand, we found out plenty about the horse on his first run and his potential style.
“So we took a lot of positives out of his first start for us. He is in really good nick and we hope he will be competitive in a good race on Saturday.”
Appleby’s Ahtoug, runner up 12 months ago, will have another crack at the 1,000 metres dash on the turf.
The seven-year-old bay has been in excellent form, winning his first start and going down by a short head to Sir Maximilian in his last two starts over the course and distance.
“I was pleased with his 13 draw as I am always happier to be near the stands’ side in sprints at Meydan,” Appleby said. “I have been pleased with his preparation. He is fresh and well and came out of his last run in very good order. He seems to be going into the race in good form.”

Attacks on Egypt’s long rooted Copts
Egypt’s Copts belong to one of the world’s oldest Christian communities, with Mark the Evangelist credited with founding their church around 300 AD. Orthodox Christians account for the overwhelming majority of Christians in Egypt, with the rest mainly made up of Greek Orthodox, Catholics and Anglicans.
The community accounts for some 10 per cent of Egypt’s 100 million people, with the largest concentrations of Christians found in Cairo, Alexandria and the provinces of Minya and Assiut south of Cairo.
Egypt’s Christians have had a somewhat turbulent history in the Muslim majority Arab nation, with the community occasionally suffering outright persecution but generally living in peace with their Muslim compatriots. But radical Muslims who have first emerged in the 1970s have whipped up anti-Christian sentiments, something that has, in turn, led to an upsurge in attacks against their places of worship, church-linked facilities as well as their businesses and homes.
More recently, ISIS has vowed to go after the Christians, claiming responsibility for a series of attacks against churches packed with worshippers starting December 2016.
The discrimination many Christians complain about and the shift towards religious conservatism by many Egyptian Muslims over the last 50 years have forced hundreds of thousands of Christians to migrate, starting new lives in growing communities in places as far afield as Australia, Canada and the United States.
Here is a look at major attacks against Egypt's Coptic Christians in recent years:
November 2: Masked gunmen riding pickup trucks opened fire on three buses carrying pilgrims to the remote desert monastery of St. Samuel the Confessor south of Cairo, killing 7 and wounding about 20. IS claimed responsibility for the attack.
May 26, 2017: Masked militants riding in three all-terrain cars open fire on a bus carrying pilgrims on their way to the Monastery of St. Samuel the Confessor, killing 29 and wounding 22. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
April 2017: Twin attacks by suicide bombers hit churches in the coastal city of Alexandria and the Nile Delta city of Tanta. At least 43 people are killed and scores of worshippers injured in the Palm Sunday attack, which narrowly missed a ceremony presided over by Pope Tawadros II, spiritual leader of Egypt Orthodox Copts, in Alexandria's St. Mark's Cathedral. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks.
February 2017: Hundreds of Egyptian Christians flee their homes in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula, fearing attacks by ISIS. The group's North Sinai affiliate had killed at least seven Coptic Christians in the restive peninsula in less than a month.
December 2016: A bombing at a chapel adjacent to Egypt's main Coptic Christian cathedral in Cairo kills 30 people and wounds dozens during Sunday Mass in one of the deadliest attacks carried out against the religious minority in recent memory. ISIS claimed responsibility.
July 2016: Pope Tawadros II says that since 2013 there were 37 sectarian attacks on Christians in Egypt, nearly one incident a month. A Muslim mob stabs to death a 27-year-old Coptic Christian man, Fam Khalaf, in the central city of Minya over a personal feud.
May 2016: A Muslim mob ransacks and torches seven Christian homes in Minya after rumours spread that a Christian man had an affair with a Muslim woman. The elderly mother of the Christian man was stripped naked and dragged through a street by the mob.
New Year's Eve 2011: A bomb explodes in a Coptic Christian church in Alexandria as worshippers leave after a midnight mass, killing more than 20 people.

Three-day coronation
Royal purification
The entire coronation ceremony extends over three days from May 4-6, but Saturday is the one to watch. At the time of 10:09am the royal purification ceremony begins. Wearing a white robe, the king will enter a pavilion at the Grand Palace, where he will be doused in sacred water from five rivers and four ponds in Thailand. In the distant past water was collected from specific rivers in India, reflecting the influential blend of Hindu and Buddhist cosmology on the coronation. Hindu Brahmins and the country's most senior Buddhist monks will be present. Coronation practices can be traced back thousands of years to ancient India.
The crown
Not long after royal purification rites, the king proceeds to the Baisal Daksin Throne Hall where he receives sacred water from eight directions. Symbolically that means he has received legitimacy from all directions of the kingdom. He ascends the Bhadrapitha Throne, where in regal robes he sits under a Nine-Tiered Umbrella of State. Brahmins will hand the monarch the royal regalia, including a wooden sceptre inlaid with gold, a precious stone-encrusted sword believed to have been found in a lake in northern Cambodia, slippers, and a whisk made from yak's hair.
The Great Crown of Victory is the centrepiece. Tiered, gold and weighing 7.3 kilograms, it has a diamond from India at the top. Vajiralongkorn will personally place the crown on his own head and then issues his first royal command.
The audience
On Saturday afternoon, the newly-crowned king is set to grant a "grand audience" to members of the royal family, the privy council, the cabinet and senior officials. Two hours later the king will visit the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred space in Thailand, which on normal days is thronged with tourists. He then symbolically moves into the Royal Residence.
The procession
The main element of Sunday's ceremonies, streets across Bangkok's historic heart have been blocked off in preparation for this moment. The king will sit on a royal palanquin carried by soldiers dressed in colourful traditional garb. A 21-gun salute will start the procession. Some 200,000 people are expected to line the seven-kilometre route around the city.
Meet the people
On the last day of the ceremony Rama X will appear on the balcony of Suddhaisavarya Prasad Hall in the Grand Palace at 4:30pm "to receive the good wishes of the people". An hour later, diplomats will be given an audience at the Grand Palace. This is the only time during the ceremony that representatives of foreign governments will greet the king.

SUNDERLAND 2002-03
No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.

Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.
FULHAM 2018-19
Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.
