Ireland retain the title and GB jockey Hanagan wins solo award

Paul Hanagan of Great Britain won the individual title and Ireland took the team trophy for the second year in a row at the Shergar Cup jockey competition Saturday at Ascot in England.

Ireland retained the title with a one-two finish in the final race, with Morache Music under Fran Berry leading Colm O'Donoghue's Desert Law over the line.

Ireland were third going into the race, but the strong finish from Berry and O'Donoghue took them to 70 points. Great Britain were second on 63 points and the Rest of the World, who led after five races, were forced to settle for third.

Hanagan won the first race aboard Sarrsar, a Godolphin horse that got the perfect break on the rail in the Les Ambassadeurs Casino Shergar Cup Mile. He did not win any of the remaining five races, but had enough high places - including third in the final race - to take the title.

Also Saturday, Godolphin picked up two Group 3 wins at Newmarket with a pair of two-year-old fillies. Discourse won the Sweet Solero Stakes and Minidress won the Maiden Fillies Stakes.

Both fillies are trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni.

Discourse was ridden by Frankie Dettori.
