ABU DHABI // Grab the chance and contribute to waqf over Ramadan, worshippers will be told today.
The Islamic concept of waqf, or endowment, is based on allocating a piece of land or property to serve Islamic or charity purposes.
"We are living the blessings of this Holy Month, where rewards of those who fast are doubled ... and the rewards of charity spenders are doubled, so grab the opportunity in those days," the sermon says. The significance of waqf also lies in the fact that it is considered a continuing act of charity, counted in the donator's credit of hasanat [rewards from God] even after he or she dies.
"The one who benefits the most from the waqf is the donator himself, because he is rewarded multiple times more the rewards in this life and the credits keep flowing for him [or her] when he is in his grave," it adds.
The sermon also cites examples of waqf performed by the Prophet's companions, such as the third caliphate, Uthman ibn Affan, who bought an "Al Rouma" water well and gave it to the people.
Omar Al Braiki, a 34-year-old Emirati finance manager, says he has been contributing to waqf for five years. "Every time there is a project that I receive info about from a trusted source, I contribute."
He says he prefers waqf to regular charity, because the credits from God are infinite.
