DUBAI // A drugged-up, disoriented driver was arrested after asking police the way back to Ras Al Khaimah.
SJ, 19, an Emirati, was today sentenced to a year in prison and fined Dh20,000 by the Misdemeanours Court after admitting consuming drugs and being under the influence of them while driving a vehicle.
He was arrested on December 24 after stopping a police patrol near Al Safa Park in Jumeirah and asking them the way back to his home emirate.
"When we asked him if he was on any drugs, he said he was on medication but did not specify what it was or why he was taking it," said one of the officers in the patrol, AA.
"When I asked him about the medication he took, he answered me in a mocking tone."
The officers noticed his speech was slurred and took him to Bur Dubai Police Station where they searched his car for drugs but found none. They then referred him to Rashid Hospital for a drug test.
"I did take Tramadol and Camadrin drugs," he told the investigating prosecutor, adding that he took them without a prescription.
He also said he had been taking these drugs for about six months.
