DUBAI // Two engineers stole Dh235,000 worth of fibre optic cables from du, a court heard today.
Prosecutors told the criminal court that OA, 32, and SA, 29, both from India, would order more cables than their work required before selling the leftovers on the internet. They said that OA, who joined the company five years ago, planned and carried out the theft in April 2011 after recruiting the other man as an accomplice.
Prosecutors claimed the men had confessed to the crime, saying they had carried out three such thefts - the last of which took place on January 5, when the two men were arrested.
An executive from du told the court the company received a tip-off that fibre optic cables were being offered for sale on the internet. The company then informed police.
The cables were being sold by a third man, DP, a 33-year-old sales manager also from India, who was arresteed after selling the cables to an undercover officer. He then led police to the two engineers
The two engineers were not present in court today, but the sales manager denied purchasing the cables knowing they were stolen.
The next hearing was scheduled for October 3.
