Three charged over fatal Global Village accident



DUBAI // A partner at the Global Villages Indian pavilion and two engineers appeared in court for the first time this week on charges they caused the death of one woman and injured another when when the structure collapsed in February last year.

SP, 56, an Indian and partner at the pavilion; JD, 36, a Filipina, and MS, 55, a Pakistani, both engineers, denied the charges when before presiding judge Jamal Abdul Majid at the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours on Sunday.

The victim MR, an Iraqi, died after heavy rains and strong winds brought down part of the Indian pavilion on February 28, 2010, at the entertainment attraction in Dubai.

Records said that another woman, identified as ZH, was seriously injured in the accident, while 13 others suffered minor injuries.

Police said the Iraqi woman died of her injuries after being taken by ambulance to Rashid Hospital on the night of the accident.

Saeed Ali bin Redha, chief executive of Global Village, said at the time that the management of Global Village extended its deepest condolences and sympathy to the victim’s family and to the injured.

The next hearing was scheduled for May 22 to hear witness testimony.
