Three 'posed as police to rob safe'

DUBAI // Police have arrested three people on suspicion of posing as police oficers so that they could steal more than Dh1million worth of jewellery and Dh267,000 in cash from a businessman.

Two men dressed in kanduras and claiming to be CID officers stopped the Indian businessman on his way home at the end of April. They told him they needed to search his house as they had received a tip that he possessed illegal money.

"They presented police identity cards and a search warrant from the public prosecution, so he agreed to let them into his home," said Col Salem Al Rumaithi, deputy head of the CID.

The two men asked to check the businessman's safe and when he opened it they jumped on him and tied his hands before taking the contents.

After two hours, the businessman managed to untie himself and reported the theft.

At about the same time, police received a complaint from a motorist that a car, which was rented, was blocking the road parallel to the businessman's home.

Police then contacted the rental company. A woman and a man arrived and were arrested and they led police to a second man who was arrested. Police recovered all the stolen items.

Two men from an unnamed Arab country and a Moldovan woman have been referred to the public prosecution.
