Don't hold up ambulances or police on the roads, Dubai police urge motorists

Police in Dubai have urged motorists to give way to emergency vehicles or risk being fined and hit with black points on their licence.

In a series of social media posts, police reiterated the fines and said: "Remember that the penalty for not giving way to emergency vehicles is Dh500 and four traffic points."

Emergency services have long complained of vehicles failing to give way, in addition to seeing some drivers stopping to watch or video accidents, blocking crews in the process.

Between about 80 and 120 Dubai drivers have been fined each year, according to recent figures.

“We need to make sure that motorists move out of the way when they see emergency vehicles, especially ambulances, said Brigadier Omar Al Shamsi, deputy director of the operations department, speaking last year.

Khalifa bin Derai, executive director of Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, also said at the time there have been cases of motorists getting in the way of ambulances operating at crash sites.

“We have had such cases and this not acceptable because we are talking about a person’s life here,” he said.

UK's plans to cut net migration

Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.

Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.

But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.

Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.

Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.

The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
