A driver was killed and his wife and two young children hurt after he was involved in a road crash in Ajman while not wearing a seat belt and being distracted by his mobile phone.

The Arab man, 49, lost control of his vehicle and smashed into a barrier on Al Ittihad Road in the emirate.

The motorist's wife, 35, and children, aged three and four, required hospital treatment for minor injuries.

Police, civil defence and the ambulance service were dispatched to the scene but the motorist sadly died from severe injuries resulting from the crash.

Colonel Saif Abdullah Al Falasi, of Ajman Police, sent out a safety warning to the public over the dangers of using a mobile phone and not wearing a seat belt while behind the wheel.

Ajman Police did not disclose the time and date of the accident.
