UAE University will launch its ground-breaking PhD programme next month with nearly twice as many students as originally planned. Thirty-eight students will begin their four-year pursuit of a doctorate at the Al Ain-based university in subjects ranging from information-technology systems to human genetics. UAEU is the first federal university to offer PhDs. It had planned to accept 20 students but increased the size of the programme after receiving more than 1,000 applications.
More than half of the students accepted were born in the UAE and about a quarter are Emiratis. "We were only planning to have 20, [but] we had so many outstanding applications that we squeezed more funds from our budget," said Dr Rory Hume, the university's provost. The start of PhDs at the university demonstrated "the maturity of higher education in this country and of our institution", he added.
"They will be undertaking research that will be of value to the country. It will have both economic and social benefits," Dr Hume said. Students are beginning work toward PhDs in engineering, medicine, IT and science. The university hopes to take on more candidates in the summer, including some who will study the humanities and social sciences. The university has added academic staff in areas such as IT to help run the programme, and is also looking to take on professors in areas such as human biology and plant genetics.
Officials recently announced plans to set up a public-health research institute at the university, which was recently ranked the 374th best institution in the world. Until recently, few institutions in the UAE offered doctorates, with most concentrating on undergraduate and masters programmes. At Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, a student began working towards a PhD in November. The British University in Dubai has launched a doctorate in education degree, and the University of Wollongong Dubai has announced that it will soon offer doctorates.

Build an emergency fund: Make sure you have enough cash to cover six months of expenses as a buffer against unexpected problems before you begin investing, advises Steve Cronin, the founder of DeadSimpleSaving.com.
Think long-term: When you invest, you need to have a long-term mindset, so don’t worry about momentary ups and downs in the stock market.
Invest worldwide: Diversify your investments globally, ideally by way of a global stock index fund.
Is your money tied up: Avoid anything where you cannot get your money back in full within a month at any time without any penalty.
Skip past the promises: “If an investment product is offering more than 10 per cent return per year, it is either extremely risky or a scam,” Mr Cronin says.
Choose plans with low fees: Make sure that any funds you buy do not charge more than 1 per cent in fees, Mr Cronin says. “If you invest by yourself, you can easily stay below this figure.” Managed funds and commissionable investments often come with higher fees.
Be sceptical about recommendations: If someone suggests an investment to you, ask if they stand to gain, advises Mr Cronin. “If they are receiving commission, they are unlikely to recommend an investment that’s best for you.”
Get financially independent: Mr Cronin advises UAE residents to pursue financial independence. Start with a Google search and improve your knowledge via expat investing websites or Facebook groups such as SimplyFI.
