ABU DHABI // A UAE serviceman died on Sunday during a ground offensive launched by the Armed Forces against the Houthi rebel militias in Marib as part of the Saudi-led Arab coalition in Yemen.

The General Command of the UAE Armed Forces announced the Emirati serviceman was killed carrying out his duties during the operations.

Including this most recent casualty, 53 servicemen have been killed in Yemen this month while taking part in the Saudi-led coalition’s Operation Restoring Hope. Fifty-two died on September 4 during a rocket attack by Houthi rebels on an ammunition store.

Leaders across the country have been paying tribute to the fallen war heroes and paying their respects to the families of the lost servicemen.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, opened Sunday’s Cabinet session with a minute’s silence for those who died and the Cabinet offered its condolences to the people of the UAE, state news agency Wam reported.

“We offer condolences to ourselves, both the Government and the people of the UAE, on the martyrdom of 52 of our brave soldiers who have ascended to Paradise to write the new history of the UAE,” the ministers said on Sunday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, met with families in Al Ain, Sharjah and Dubai.

“We will always remember, as long as we live, the sacrifices of our martyrs,” he said. “We will hold our heads high because of their heroism, steadfastness and bravery which will provide eternal lessons in sacrifice and courage that the coming generations will be proud of over the years.”
