Doctors removed a 17.5kg tumour from an Emirati woman's abdomen in a life-saving surgery on Friday.
The 35-year-old teacher was admitted to the accident and emergency department at Latifa Hospital after suffering from severe abdominal pain.
Initial examinations indicated she had low blood pressure, high pulse and low haemoglobin levels.
“The screening showed that the tumour was between 35-40 cm and caused great pressure on the patient’s organs including the lungs and she could have died,” said Dr Amal Al Qedrah the head of obstetrics and gynaecology department at the hospital.
She said the woman's case was rare and the tumour is the largest one ever removed in any of Dubai Health Authority’s hospitals.
A team of doctors performed the three-hour surgery immediately and successfully removed the tumour, the woman’s uterus and her ovaries.
The patient is expected to make a full recovery and return home on Wednesday.
