Authorities closed two shopping centres in Ajman for not abiding by Covid-19 safety regulations.

Inspectors found customers without face masks and flouting physical distancing rules.

The emirate’s Department of Economic Development said the centres would be allowed to reopen only after rectifying the situation.

"Both centres were temporarily shut down for public safety and will be opened after ensuring all conditions and requirements are complied with,” said Majed Al Suwaidi, an inspection manager in Ajman.

It comes as authorities step up efforts across the country to ensure people are following Covid-19 rules.

Sports centres, swim academies and commercial establishments have been shut down across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Officials also asked consumers to report retailers who ignore guidelines.

A Moroccan actress was arrested by Dubai Police after posting videos of birthday celebrations in two restaurants that showed guests bunched together in defiance of physical distancing rules.

Police have also arrested people on suspicion of breaching mandatory quarantine.
