ABU DHABI // Despite a UAE Minister announcing that Government employees will not receive pay rises anytime soon, a Federal National Council member has called for the matter to be reconsidered.
At last week’s public FNC session, Obaid Al Tayer, the Minister of State for Finance Affairs, said the Government had no plans to increase the pay of public sector workers. Salaries for Government workers between Grades 7 and 14 were sufficient, he added.
Since then, Mosabeh Al Kitbi (Sharjah) has called on the Government to think again.
He said the federal Government should follow the lead of Sharjah, which recently set a minimum wage for Emirati government staff of Dh11,000.
Mr Al Kitbi noted that some Emiratis made only Dh5,000 a month and struggled to support their families.
“A lot of the time we find the father in continuous struggle due to his low income and a long list of expenses,” he said. “Providing food and drink continuously comes at a cost for each member in a family, clothing also, and special occasions at schools and birthdays and weddings and the like. This all adds to the father’s burdens, in addition to providing all the above to all domestic workers in the home.”
He added that those whose children attend private schools face additional expenses, and cited other issues such as bank loans for cars and homes.
“The question is, is Dh5,000 enough for all these expenses?” he said. “And is it logical that a person who works earns Dh5,000 and a person who retires earns Dh10,000?”
He said the Government was aware of the number of Emiratis in its employ at such a low wage, and called for immediate action.
He added that “fathers”, or breadwinners, need not deprive their families from happiness or deprive their wives and children of a life that others were living.

How to keep control of your emotions
If your investment decisions are being dictated by emotions such as fear, greed, hope, frustration and boredom, it is time for a rethink, Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trading platform IG, says.
Greed
Greedy investors trade beyond their means, open more positions than usual or hold on to positions too long to chase an even greater gain. “All too often, they incur a heavy loss and may even wipe out the profit already made.
Tip: Ignore the short-term hype, noise and froth and invest for the long-term plan, based on sound fundamentals.
Fear
The risk of making a loss can cloud decision-making. “This can cause you to close out a position too early, or miss out on a profit by being too afraid to open a trade,” he says.
Tip: Start with a plan, and stick to it. For added security, consider placing stops to reduce any losses and limits to lock in profits.
Hope
While all traders need hope to start trading, excessive optimism can backfire. Too many traders hold on to a losing trade because they believe that it will reverse its trend and become profitable.
Tip: Set realistic goals. Be happy with what you have earned, rather than frustrated by what you could have earned.
Frustration
Traders can get annoyed when the markets have behaved in unexpected ways and generates losses or fails to deliver anticipated gains.
Tip: Accept in advance that asset price movements are completely unpredictable and you will suffer losses at some point. These can be managed, say, by attaching stops and limits to your trades.
Boredom
Too many investors buy and sell because they want something to do. They are trading as entertainment, rather than in the hope of making money. As well as making bad decisions, the extra dealing charges eat into returns.
Tip: Open an online demo account and get your thrills without risking real money.

The flights
The closest international airport to the TMB trail is Geneva (just over an hour’s drive from the French ski town of Chamonix where most people start and end the walk). Direct flights from the UAE to Geneva are available with Etihad and Emirates from about Dh2,790 including taxes.
The trek
The Tour du Mont Blanc takes about 10 to 14 days to complete if walked in its entirety, but by using the services of a tour operator such as Raw Travel, a shorter “highlights” version allows you to complete the best of the route in a week, from Dh6,750 per person. The trails are blocked by snow from about late October to early May. Most people walk in July and August, but be warned that trails are often uncomfortably busy at this time and it can be very hot. The prime months are June and September.

Analysis
Maros Sefcovic is juggling multiple international trade agreement files, but his message was clear when he spoke to The National on Wednesday.
The EU-UAE bilateral trade deal will be finalised soon, he said. It is in everyone’s interests to do so. Both sides want to move quickly and are in alignment. He said the UAE is a very important partner for the EU. It’s full speed ahead - and with some lofty ambitions - on the road to a free trade agreement.
