SHARJAH // The president of Liberia has urged the international community to continue its support for her country and the region in the fight against Ebola.
In a keynote address on the second day of the 4th International Government Communication Forum in Sharjah on Monday, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf highlighted the efforts of Liberians to overcome the deadly disease and talked about the ongoing economic recovery in her country.
Despite the poor health infrastructure in Liberia, confusion and fear of the disease, various bodies have come together with the help of the international community.
“Liberians took on the challenge to save our country. A coordinating body was established to include government, the international community, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, to reinforce [the idea] that the responsibility to solve the problem rested essentially with ourselves,” said Ms Johnson Sirleaf.
The two-day IGCF forum was inaugurated by Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi, Sharjah’s Ruler, on Sunday. The former president of Lebanon, Gen Michel Sleiman, and Julia Gillard, Australia’s former prime minister were also due to take part.
