Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed congratulates Iraqis after Pope Francis visit

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed congratulated the people of Iraq after Pope Francis's landmark visit to the country.

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces said he hoped the pontiff's four-day visit would mark a new era of peace and prosperity for the Iraqi people.

"We greatly admire His Holiness’s efforts to strengthen unity and friendship," Sheikh Mohamed said on Twitter.

Over the past few days, Pope Francis visited Iraqi cities including the capital Baghdad, Najaf in the south, and Erbil and Mosul in the north.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church attended a meeting for interfaith dialogue in the city of Ur, the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham.

The Pope emphasised the importance of promoting human fraternity and called on all believers to revive its values.

He also held a historic meeting with leading Shiite cleric Ayatollah Ali Al Sistani.

On Monday, the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity praised Pope Francis's visit, calling it a true promotion of the values advocated by a document signed by the pontiff during his 2019 visit to the UAE.

Cardinal Ayusu Geksot, president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue and a member of the higher committee, accompanied the Pope on his visit to Iraq.

Cardinal Geksot said the trip was to "promote cultural dialogue and a culture of convergence and inclusiveness, so that everyone in our society can enjoy peace in his life regardless of his race, culture or religion".

Pope Francis made his first visit to the Arabian Peninsula three years ago, on February 3.

During his three-day trip, he held talks with the UAE's rulers, and visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Founder’s Memorial, where a significant moment for interfaith relations took place.

Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Dr Ahmed Al Tayeb, signed the Human Fraternity Document, which calls on people around the globe to unite for interfaith harmony and spread a message of peace.

His final day in the country was devoted to his flock, first with a blessing for the congregation at St Joseph's church and then to deliver the first public mass in the UAE.

Before about 150,000 people at Zayed Sports City, the Pope delivered a Mass that included contributions in nine different languages, from Arabic to Urdu, in a reflection of the UAE’s diversity and a gesture of respect to his hosts.

Basquiat in Abu Dhabi

One of Basquiat’s paintings, the vibrant Cabra (1981–82), now hangs in Louvre Abu Dhabi temporarily, on loan from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

The latter museum is not open physically, but has assembled a collection and puts together a series of events called Talking Art, such as this discussion, moderated by writer Chaedria LaBouvier.

It's something of a Basquiat season in Abu Dhabi at the moment. Last week, The Radiant Child, a documentary on Basquiat was shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat, and tonight (April 18) the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is throwing the re-creation of a party tonight, of the legendary Canal Zone party thrown in 1979, which epitomised the collaborative scene of the time. It was at Canal Zone that Basquiat met prominent members of the art world and moved from unknown graffiti artist into someone in the spotlight.

“We’ve invited local resident arists, we’ll have spray cans at the ready,” says curator Maisa Al Qassemi of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi's Canal Zone Remix is at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Thursday April 18, from 8pm. Free entry to all. Basquiat's Cabra is on view at Louvre Abu Dhabi until October

Three ways to limit your social media use

Clinical psychologist, Dr Saliha Afridi at The Lighthouse Arabia suggests three easy things you can do every day to cut back on the time you spend online.

1. Put the social media app in a folder on the second or third screen of your phone so it has to remain a conscious decision to open, rather than something your fingers gravitate towards without consideration.

2. Schedule a time to use social media instead of consistently throughout the day. I recommend setting aside certain times of the day or week when you upload pictures or share information.

3. Take a mental snapshot rather than a photo on your phone. Instead of sharing it with your social world, try to absorb the moment, connect with your feeling, experience the moment with all five of your senses. You will have a memory of that moment more vividly and for far longer than if you take a picture of it.

Tips on buying property during a pandemic

Islay Robinson, group chief executive of mortgage broker Enness Global, offers his advice on buying property in today's market.

While many have been quick to call a market collapse, this simply isn’t what we’re seeing on the ground. Many pockets of the global property market, including London and the UAE, continue to be compelling locations to invest in real estate.

While an air of uncertainty remains, the outlook is far better than anyone could have predicted. However, it is still important to consider the wider threat posed by Covid-19 when buying bricks and mortar.

Anything with outside space, gardens and private entrances is a must and these property features will see your investment keep its value should the pandemic drag on. In contrast, flats and particularly high-rise developments are falling in popularity and investors should avoid them at all costs.

Attractive investment property can be hard to find amid strong demand and heightened buyer activity. When you do find one, be prepared to move hard and fast to secure it. If you have your finances in order, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Lenders continue to lend and rates remain at an all-time low, so utilise this. There is no point in tying up cash when you can keep this liquidity to maximise other opportunities.

Keep your head and, as always when investing, take the long-term view. External factors such as coronavirus or Brexit will present challenges in the short-term, but the long-term outlook remains strong.

Finally, keep an eye on your currency. Whenever currency fluctuations favour foreign buyers, you can bet that demand will increase, as they act to secure what is essentially a discounted property.
