Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed hails humanitarian vision of Sheikh Zayed

  • English
  • Arabic

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, paid warm tribute to the vision of 'kindness and compassion' laid down by his father, Sheikh Zayed.

On Zayed Humanitarian Day - held each year on the 19th day of Ramadan to mark the anniversary of the death of the Founding Father - Sheikh Mohamed said he had left behind a legacy felt across the globe.

He said Sheikh Zayed sought to offer support to people of all faiths and races - and highlighted the importance of following in his footsteps.

"On Zayed Humanitarian Day we honour the generosity of our Founding Father, God rest his soul," said Sheikh Mohamed.

"His philanthropic efforts extended across the world, regardless of faith or race, and on this day we renew our efforts to walk along his path of kindness and compassion for all."

Hessa Buhumaid, Minister of Community Development, said Zayed Humanitarian Day offered an opportunity to reflect on the values instilled by Sheikh Zayed.

She described the country's first president as a "pioneer of humanitarian giving" who established a country in which subsequent generations have made "greater efforts in making good deeds, giving and solidarity with others".

She said the work of the Ministry of Community Development was a fitting tribute to the harmonious spirit of Sheikh Zayed.

''The MoCD, based on the principles of achieving family cohesion and community coherence, continues to support the solidarity and cohesion of the nation and people at various times, especially during the current circumstances, where the sense of responsibility is multiplied by everyone,'' she said.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, Ruler's Representative in the Al Dhafra region and Chairman of Emirates Red Crescent, said the pivotal role played by the UAE in helping other nations during the Covid-19 pandemic showed the far-reaching impact of Sheikh Zayed's leadership.

"These achievements made by the UAE in this regard are a natural result of cumulative experiences in humanitarian and voluntary work and a long journey of giving and generosity, the foundations of which were laid by the late Sheikh Zayed," said Sheikh Hamdan.

He said President Sheikh Khalifa, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, continued to champion this cause.

"Sheikh Zayed took a unique approach in supporting the causes of people and alleviating their suffering caused by conflicts, disasters and unrest that claimed the lives of millions," Sheikh Hamdan added.

"Thanks to his efforts and generous initiatives, the UAE occupied a remarkable position in the fields of charitable and humanitarian work regionally and internationally."

Why it pays to compare

A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.

Route 1: bank transfer

The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount

Total received: €4,670.30

Route 2: online platform

The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction

Total received: €4,756

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

The BIO

Favourite piece of music: Verdi’s Requiem. It’s awe-inspiring.

Biggest inspiration: My father, as I grew up in a house where music was constantly played on a wind-up gramophone. I had amazing music teachers in primary and secondary school who inspired me to take my music further. They encouraged me to take up music as a profession and I follow in their footsteps, encouraging others to do the same.

Favourite book: Ian McEwan’s Atonement – the ending alone knocked me for six.

Favourite holiday destination: Italy - music and opera is so much part of the life there. I love it.

Global Fungi Facts

• Scientists estimate there could be as many as 3 million fungal species globally
• Only about 160,000 have been officially described leaving around 90% undiscovered
• Fungi account for roughly 90% of Earth's unknown biodiversity
• Forest fungi help tackle climate change, absorbing up to 36% of global fossil fuel emissions annually and storing around 5 billion tonnes of carbon in the planet's topsoil
