UAE government websites and local banks were among the organisations targeted by hackers, the country's telecoms regulator has said.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said on Sunday it foiled 289 cyber attacks during the first three months of this year.
The organisation's Computer Emergency Response Team responded to 136 attempts, 133 against government websites and three against private sector websites.
The TRA said it "advises all concerned authorities of the necessity to follow essential information security policy, as well as creating backup copies of their data and saving them on other devices that are not connected to the internet".
Global ransomware viruses caused havoc in May and June when hackers targeted major organisations across the globe, including the shipping company Maersk, Russian oil producer Rosnef and Britain's National Health Service.
The incident exposed weaknesses in cyber defence and led to warnings about the need to be better prepared against hackers.

Who was Alfred Nobel?
