The UAE recorded 2,012 coronavirus infections on Monday as the number of active cases in the country continued to fall. The latest cases brought the overall tally to 472,148. Another 2,147 patients beat the virus as the number of recoveries climbed to 456,747. The daily recovery total surpassed new cases for the 23rd day running, helping reduce active cases to 13,889. Two Covid-19 patients died, raising the number of fatalities to 1,512. Infection and death rates have been on the decline in recent weeks after hitting a peak in February. The UAE reported a record 3,977 infections on February 3, while its highest daily death toll of 20 followed on February 19. After returning daily case figures in excess of 3,000 for much of February and January, numbers have fallen to roughly 2,000 per day since March. Daily death rates were consistently in double figures for about six weeks from the beginning of February but have since dropped off. Mass testing and a nationwide vaccination drive have been hailed as key to winning the fight against Covid-19. A further 195,573 tests were carried out. The screening level has regularly been above 200,000 each day in recent weeks, reaching record highs of more than 250,000 and 260,000 on Saturday and Sunday. Close to 38.8 million tests have been conducted since the outbreak began. More than 8.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered since December as the Emirates edges closer to its target of herd immunity.
