DUBAI // On a daily basis, mobile phone users in the UAE can expect numerous beeps alerting them to a new spam text.
It is something that leaves many frustrated, especially if the messages arrive when they're sleep.
Both Du and Etisalat have procedures in place to allow customers to block these texts.
"For the benefit of customers, Du has taken proactive steps, in accordance to TRA's Unsolicited Electronic Communication Regulatory Policy, to control and regulate receiving promotional and spam SMS from third parties," Du said in a statement.
"To restrict spam SMSes - which are primarily unsolicited electronic communication from third parties such as financial institutions, retailers and stores - Du has set up a mechanism to allow customers to block messages from the sender."
The service is free and requires the customer to send a text with the sender's ID or shortcode number to 7726.
Etisalat customers can unsubscribe from the carrier's messages by sending 'b Etisalat' to 7726.
Du customers can also opt out of receiving promotional messages from Du by sending a blank message to 5293. The request will be processed within 40 days.
To reactivate the service send a blank text to 7000.
