ABU DHABI // The week may get off to a wet start. The national weather office has predicted scattered showers in Abu Dhabi today and tomorrow, and heavier rainfall in Al Gharbia and the northern emirates.
"There is a good chance of light rain in Abu Dhabi and moderate or heavy rain in the western areas like Delma," a spokesman for the National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology said yesterday.
A low pressure mass would form into clouds over the northern Gulf and extend to the UAE, the spokesman said.
"It will be developing gradually in the morning from moisture coming from the Gulf Sea," he said. "This is due to low pressure and north-westerly winds coming from a cool area in the north Gulf like Saudi and Kuwait."
Maximum temperature today and tomorrow was expected to be about 26C.
The introduction of cooler, strong winds would also mean rough seas, the spokesman said. "Please, everybody be careful. Fishermen should not go out. It is dangerous, especially with the clouds," he added.
The outlook for Dubai today is partly cloudy with a possibility of wind-blown sand in the open areas in the morning, followed by clouds and a chance of rain overnight. Tomorrow will be cooler with a chance of showers, according to Dubai's Meteorological Office forecast.
The clouds will linger over Dubai on Tuesday and remain into Wednesday, with another small chance of showers in the early morning, the Dubai forecast said.

What is 'Soft Power'?
Soft power was first mentioned in 1990 by former US Defence Secretary Joseph Nye.
He believed that there were alternative ways of cultivating support from other countries, instead of achieving goals using military strength.
Soft power is, at its root, the ability to convince other states to do what you want without force.
This is traditionally achieved by proving that you share morals and values.
Islamophobia definition
A widely accepted definition was made by the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims in 2019: “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” It further defines it as “inciting hatred or violence against Muslims”.
Family reunited
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was born and raised in Tehran and studied English literature before working as a translator in the relief effort for the Japanese International Co-operation Agency in 2003.
She moved to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies before moving to the World Health Organisation as a communications officer.
She came to the UK in 2007 after securing a scholarship at London Metropolitan University to study a master's in communication management and met her future husband through mutual friends a month later.
The couple were married in August 2009 in Winchester and their daughter was born in June 2014.
She was held in her native country a year later.

Strait of Hormuz
Fujairah is a crucial hub for fuel storage and is just outside the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route linking Middle East oil producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.
The strait is 33 km wide at its narrowest point, but the shipping lane is just three km wide in either direction. Almost a fifth of oil consumed across the world passes through the strait.
Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait, a move that would risk inviting geopolitical and economic turmoil.
Last month, Iran issued a new warning that it would block the strait, if it was prevented from using the waterway following a US decision to end exemptions from sanctions for major Iranian oil importers.
