ABU DHABI // A man accused of joining a terrorist group in Yemen and taking part in battles said he was only “fighting Houthis who besieged him”.
MKA, 21, an Emirati, appeared at the Federal Supreme Court on Monday on charges of joining the Abu Al Fidaa Front, a terrorist group affiliated with Al Qaeda.
The court heard he had been trained in use of traditional weapons and military tactics with the aim of committing terrorist acts.
The defendant denied the charges, claiming he was in Yemen to study Sharia law when he was attacked by the Houthi rebels and had to fight back.
“I was defending myself in Dammaj against Houthis – the same Houthis that the country are now sending troops against,” he said.
“I have had no hand in terrorism but I will not back down on Islam. I am a knowledge seeker, I was in Yemen to learn about Sharia,” he said.
“I only fought against the Houthis to defend myself. I deny participating with Al Qaeda because I had met them and advised them [against their ideals] and when they would not take our advice we left.”
Judge Falah Al Hajeri asked the defendant about who Abu Al Fidaa was. MKA replied he was one of the men from a peaceful group who provided the students with food and drink.
He said he had only received basic training in self defence and did not take part in military training.
After the battles, MKA said he had travelled to Hadramaut, where he visited family members before returning to the UAE.
Defence lawyer Abdulla Al Harmoodi said the court had not found any witnesses to prove the defendant had fought in battles.
He also said the defendant was arrested two years after his return to the country, which showed lack of seriousness in investigations.
Mr Al Harmoodi said MKA’s education began three years before the incident and further information was needed about what happened in Yemen.
“He started in Medina, Saudi Arabia, then Jeddah, and then he had wanted to gain more insight in Sharia,” he said.
He said the defendant went to Yemen to learn from experts there.
“But the reality of the situation forced him to defend himself and fight. So we ask the court to have mercy on this young man and we request his acquittal,” he said.
Judge Al Hajeri requested witnesses attend the next hearing and adjourned the case until November 16.

What are the guidelines?

What are NFTs?
Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.
You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.

1. Where on the plane does my pet travel?
There are different types of travel available for pets:
- Manifest cargo
- Excess luggage in the hold
- Excess luggage in the cabin
Each option is safe. The feasibility of each option is based on the size and breed of your pet, the airline they are traveling on and country they are travelling to.
2. What is the difference between my pet traveling as manifest cargo or as excess luggage?
If traveling as manifest cargo, your pet is traveling in the front hold of the plane and can travel with or without you being on the same plane. The cost of your pets travel is based on volumetric weight, in other words, the size of their travel crate.
If traveling as excess luggage, your pet will be in the rear hold of the plane and must be traveling under the ticket of a human passenger. The cost of your pets travel is based on the actual (combined) weight of your pet in their crate.
3. What happens when my pet arrives in the country they are traveling to?
As soon as the flight arrives, your pet will be taken from the plane straight to the airport terminal.
If your pet is traveling as excess luggage, they will taken to the oversized luggage area in the arrival hall. Once you clear passport control, you will be able to collect them at the same time as your normal luggage. As you exit the airport via the ‘something to declare’ customs channel you will be asked to present your pets travel paperwork to the customs official and / or the vet on duty.
If your pet is traveling as manifest cargo, they will be taken to the Animal Reception Centre. There, their documentation will be reviewed by the staff of the ARC to ensure all is in order. At the same time, relevant customs formalities will be completed by staff based at the arriving airport.
4. How long does the travel paperwork and other travel preparations take?
This depends entirely on the location that your pet is traveling to. Your pet relocation compnay will provide you with an accurate timeline of how long the relevant preparations will take and at what point in the process the various steps must be taken.
In some cases they can get your pet ‘travel ready’ in a few days. In others it can be up to six months or more.
5. What vaccinations does my pet need to travel?
Regardless of where your pet is traveling, they will need certain vaccinations. The exact vaccinations they need are entirely dependent on the location they are traveling to. The one vaccination that is mandatory for every country your pet may travel to is a rabies vaccination.
Other vaccinations may also be necessary. These will be advised to you as relevant. In every situation, it is essential to keep your vaccinations current and to not miss a due date, even by one day. To do so could severely hinder your pets travel plans.
