DUBAI // A murder suspect is in police custody after turning himself in to the Pakistan Consulate.
Shahrukh Jatoi is wanted by detectives in Pakistan for his alleged involvement in the shooting of Shahzeb Khan, 20, in Karachi on December 24.
"He handed himself in at about 6pm on Monday," said a consulate official. "Mr Jatoi has been transferred to Dubai Police custody and we have also completed the necessary paperwork to allow for his transfer back to Pakistan.
"At this stage we do not know when that is likely to happen as we are waiting for Dubai Police to complete their procedures."
Mr Jatoi is likely to be flown back to Pakistan on the first available flight once local officers have completed their work.
"At the time of Mr Jatoi's surrender, senior superintendent of Sindh police, Niaz Khoso, was in the consulate, the official said. "A formal arrest was not made as Mr Jatoi came in willingly."
Pakistan media reported that Mr Jatoi's father, Sikander, an influential businessman, was arrested on suspicion of helping his son flee the country.
The victim was the son of a senior police officer in Pakistan. He was killed as he returned home after attending a wedding with his sister.
Mr Jatoi's arrest was ordered by Pakistan's Supreme Court.

Water waste
In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.
