ABU DHABI // Abu Dhabi police have confiscated 78 bicycles in the past four days as part of a campaign underlining the need for cyclists to wear helmets and reflective clothing, officials said yesterday.
The law requires cyclists to wear such equipment, as well as requiring bicycles to be equipped with front lamps and rear reflectors.

Col Mohammed Rashid Al Shamsi, the head of traffic control management in the capital, said the campaign was aimed at encouraging the public to embrace traffic laws.
"This is especially to reverse the trend of cyclists who enter streets from the wrong direction and ignore the safety rules," he said. "Designated areas like on the Abu Dhabi Corniche offer space for users to practice their cycling hobby safely away from public roads."
The traffic department was reaching out to families, asking them to monitor the safety of children who cycle, he said.
"They need to monitor their children closely and not let them play with bicycles on the various roads, which exposes them to serious traffic accidents that result in deaths and serious injuries."
