A meteor was sighted last night by the Abu Dhabi’s Astronomy Centre — the second to blaze through the skies above the UAE this month.
The fireball was caught on cameras and seen by the public at 10.50pm. Astronomers are calculating its trajectory and determining whether or not it would have crashed into the Earth or burnt up on descent.
If it landed, it could reveal information about the formation of our solar system. Meteorites often contain data on the history of the Earth, Moon and stars. But before the hunt can begin, scientists will have to determine its landing site based on its speed and trajectory.
Several stones that could be the remains of a meteorite that fell on March 5 were found by astronomers in the landing site south of Al Wathba. The stones are being analysed.
