Almost 50 cars were confiscated by police in Fujairah over the National Day holiday. Police said the vehicles were seized from motorists for flouting traffic laws and car decoration rules. Forty-seven drivers had their cars impounded for driving recklessly, causing disturbances and noise, and driving without a licence. Brig Ali Al Yamahi, director of traffic and patrols department, said motorists were fined up to Dh2,000 and will have their cars impounded for up to two months. He said most offences were motorists and passengers spraying passers-by with silly string and passengers hanging outside car windows or standing up through sunroofs. Motorists were also pulled up for illegally modifying their cars and decorating their vehicles in a way that obstructed the view of the driver and posed a danger to others. Brig Al Yamahi said two people were “moderately” injured in car accidents throughout the long weekend but did not reveal how many crashes were reported. He reminded motorists that National Day car decorations must be removed by December 6, at the risk of fines.
