DUBAI // The new Dubai tram system will be surrounded by 64 new speed cameras to slow nearby motorists.
Traffic police said the speed traps will be installed on all streets and intersections covered by the Al Sufouh Tram Project, which will be launched on November 11.
Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director general of traffic at Dubai Police, said 150 traffic officers will also be deployed to monitor traffic at tram intersections.
He told The National's Arabic-language sister newspaper, Al Ittihad, that any driver who causes a crash at a tram intersection will face a fine ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh30,000 and have their licence suspended for up to a year.
The tram network will launch with 11 stations serving Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence and along Al Sufouh Road. It will operate for 20 hours a day, from 5am to 1am.
Each tram will have capacity for 405 passengers on seven coaches.
