Trio accused of killing fellow student

Sharjah Sharia Court has adjourned the trial of three teenagers accused of killing a teenage Kuwaiti student.

This is to allow more time for the issue of blood money to be discussed, reported Al Ittihad, The National's Arabic-language sister paper.

Mubarak Meshaal Al Mubarak, 19, a first-year student at the University of Sharjah, died in hospital after sustaining fractures and an internal haemorrhage in February last year.

A police forensics report earlier said signs of beatings and burn marks had been found on the victim’s body.

One of those accused was the victim’s roommate and all three are in their late teens.

The prosecution told the court on Wednesday that sections of a video, six minutes and three seconds long, filmed from a mobile phone by one of the accused, includes many elements relevant to the case.

They alleged it shows violence, physical abuse and torture.

The court also heard evidence from a security guard, who is considered one of the primary witnesses. He confirmed the identity of the accused. The court rejected a bail request from the lawyer of one of the accused.

Two of the defendants attended the hearing, while the third is being tried in his absence.

Family members of the accused and the victim’s parents attended the hearing. The case was adjourned to September 3.
