Trio tried to sell a baby for Dh10,000, Dubai court hears

DUBAI // Two women and a man tried to sell a baby born from an illicit relationship for Dh10,000, a court has been told.

A A, 39, an Indonesian maid, gave birth to the girl outside wedlock, prosecutors told the Dubai Criminal Court on Sunday.

An Emirati woman who was asked to buy the infant alerted Dubai Police.

“She told us that the husband of a maid who used to work for her contacted her and asked if she wanted to buy a baby,” said police captain T A, 37, who leads the section fighting human trafficking.

“She inquired about the child and the man told her that the baby was born to a maid after she had sex with her boyfriend.”

The policeman said investigations confirmed the tip-off and a policewoman posed as an interested buyer.

She called the maid, and they arranged to meet on December 1 last year in Oud Al Mutainah.

Another officer posed as a driver and drove the policewoman to the meeting point. She was carrying Dh10,000 on her.

“A Sri Lankan woman came carrying the baby and got into the car. After taking the money she was arrested,” the police captain said.

The woman, D D, 49, said her compatriot K P, offered her Dh2,000 if she would take the baby to the Emirati buyer.

The policeman said that D D helped the police to arrest the maid, who was staying in her room.

D D also helped police to apprehend K P.

The maid confessed to having sex with a Pakistani in an Abu Dhabi hotel after she ran away from her Emirati sponsor in 2012.

“She told us she gave birth alone in a toilet in Abu Dhabi Corniche Park after she called her family and they told her how to deliver the baby,” the police captain said. “She said she named her Sheikha.”

A A, D D and K P denied a charge of human trafficking in court yesterday. The next hearing is scheduled for March 27.
