Two arrested and more than 200,000 pills seized by Dubai Police

DUBAI // Two people have been arrested and more than 213,000 amphetamine-like Captagon pills have been seized by Dubai Police.

Maj Gen Khalil Al Mansouri, deputy chief commander for Criminal Investigation Affairs, said that authorities received information about a drug-smuggling operation and were able to catch two Arab men red-handed in Al Muraqqabat on March 24.

Col Eid Mohammad Thani Hareb, director of the Anti-Narcotics Department, said that the first suspect was a 27-year-old driver for a company and the other was a 28-year-old lorry driver, both of whom did not live in Dubai.

“The two men were transporting the drugs from the emirate in which they lived to a person in Dubai based on instructions by a third individual who lived abroad,” he said. “More than 213,000 pills were found in a bag hidden in the trunk of the car, which officers raided in Al Muraqqabat area.

“Captagon pills are not popular in the UAE and are most of the time transiting before being exported to other countries.”

Col Hareb said the men were transferred to prosecutors and that they are accused of drug possession with the intent to sell and promote.
