The National is looking for a Deputy News Editor to help lead our UAE news coverage. We are looking for an imaginative, driven journalist who can come up with strong story ideas and turn them into compelling content across platforms.
Candidates should have a deep knowledge of Emirati society, politics and culture and at least five years’ experience working on UAE news with a reputable media organisation. You should have good management skills, knowing how to get the best out of reporters.
Excellence with copy is a must. Multimedia skills are a big plus. The job requires expert judgement and the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines. We are looking for someone with the competence and confidence to lead the department when the News Editor is away.

Role Summary
We are looking for a versatile digital editor to join our Platforms team in Abu Dhabi. This role is at the heart of our newsroom and we want an editor who is passionate about presenting our award-winning journalism through savvy homepage curation, innovative management of our web, app and other platforms, and informing our audience with timely, enticing alert notifications.
The successful candidate can work under pressure breaking news stories, prepare stunning multimedia story packages and polish social and newsletter promotions, while also mobilising journalists and editors for live events. This position requires strong collaboration and communication skills and the ability to shift through the gears in a fast-paced environment.
Key responsibilities
- Liaise between the duty editor and the wider newsroom to deliver a timely, daily presentation of our best stories on The National's website, app, and broader distribution across social media, other external channels and newsletters.
- Write compelling headlines, summaries and push notifications to engage with our loyal audience. Review the quality, style and tone of our content to ensure it meets The National's standards.
- Build special packages and live stories for home screens.
- Monitor and handle breaking news events across our editorial departments.
- Manage video feeds and playlists and work with our multimedia department to optimise reach and engagement.
- Master our digital production tools - including AI prompt engineering - and help coach online editors to enhance their effectiveness.
- Help our audience and analytics teams distil performance across departments.
- Work with our product and development teams to provide insights about enhancing our native platforms.
- Must be comfortable with shift work, including evenings and weekends.
Required skills and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, mass communication or a related field.
- At least three to five years of professional experience with a digital publisher, preferably within in a newsroom.
- Proven experience as a digital editor with a demonstrable portfolio of published work.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with an understanding of the requirements of web writing, including SEO and user engagement.
- Familiarity with AI, prompt engineering and other web technology trends and best practices.
- Demonstrated understanding of Middle Eastern politics and cultural sensitivities to ensure accurate, balanced and responsible coverage.
- Deep understanding of live analytics and how to structure content based on user behaviour.
- Expertise in digital storytelling, with skills in multimedia production. Video production and editing would be an advantage as would app management.
- Fluency in English required; a proficiency in Arabic is a strong advantage.

This role is central to shaping our digital storytelling strategy, curating short-form video content, and driving engagement across social platforms.
The successful candidate will combine editorial judgment with social media expertise to ensure The National remains at the forefront of news delivery in the Middle East and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
This role will sit between the Social Media Editor and a team of social media journalists, assisting the Social Media Editor in leading the development and execution of social-first editorial strategies, with a focus on TikTok and other emerging platforms.
This role will be a true generalist one, balancing long-term and short-term strategies to handle daily desk management of social media journalists while maintaining focus on short-form video strategy, particularly on TikTok.
The Deputy Editor will fill in for both the Social Media Editor and social media journalists in case of absences, while also crafting a unique vision to capitalise on trending moments in day-to-day social coverage. This role requires strong collaboration and communication skills as well as the ability to balance shifting priorities in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
Responsibilities:
- Liaise between Social Media Editor and social media journalists to ensure daily social desk management.
- Trend Monitoring: Stay ahead of digital trends, platform updates, and audience behaviours to inform content decisions. Attend daily editorial meetings to report on trends and suggest wire or social content to clip for platforms.
- Video Curation: Work with The National’s video team to identify and curate short-form video content that captures trending topics and resonates with diverse audiences.
- Audience Engagement: Drive growth and performance of The National’s social channels by optimising content for reach, engagement and impact.
- Editorial Oversight: Collaborate with video, newsroom editors, reporters and social media journalists to translate complex stories into compelling social media narratives.
- Team Collaboration: Mentor junior journalists and contribute to a culture of innovation and excellence in digital journalism.
- Must be comfortable with shift work, sometimes including evenings and weekends.
Required experience:
- 3–5 years of professional experience in news and social media, ideally within a newsroom or publisher environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of Middle Eastern politics and cultural sensitivities to ensure accurate, balanced and responsible coverage.
- Proven track record in short-form video curation and social coverage for trending topics. While video production is not a requirement for this role, proven experience with short-form video editing would be an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to drive high-performing content on TikTok for news publishers.
- Fluency in English required; advanced proficiency in another Middle Eastern language is a strong advantage.
- Excellent understanding of social media analytics, audience insights and platform best practices.
