BEIRUT // Rubbish is piling up on the streets of Beirut amid a growing dispute over Lebanon’s largest dump.

Sukleen, the company in charge of picking up refuse, has workers sweeping Beirut’s streets but not making any collections.

The company’s spokesman said it could not take any more waste to the Naameh landfill, which was scheduled to close last Friday.

Residents have since prevented lorries from reaching it to unload. As the rubbish piles grow, workers are spraying the refuse bags with white powder to try to stop the spread of pests.
