A centenarian is to lead a global walking challenge while fasting during Ramadan.
Dabirul Islam Choudhury, 101, was made an OBE in Queen Elizabeth’s birthday honours list last year after previous fundraising efforts during lockdown.
Inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, Mr Choudhury raised more than £420,000 ($583,566m) last year for various charities and the UK's National Health Service by walking 970 laps of his garden in Bow, east London, in May, also during Ramadan.
Mr Choudhury, also known as Dabir Chacha or Uncle Dabir, has set the 'Walk with Dabirul' challenge, which has seen people in more than 150 cities sign up to raise funds for Covid-19 victims.
The challenge, which has so far raised more than £8,000, was originally due to take place on April 17, but was changed to April 24 to avoid a clash with the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral.
People will walk in their local park or garden, with the aim of reaching 1.5 million steps by everybody taking part.
A statement on Mr Choudhury's Just Giving site reads: “These funds will provide shelter for the homeless, feed the destitute, provide education for young girls and boys, aid widows, and help war-torn communities affected by disasters. The donations will also help build mosques in the UK.”
Funds raised will be divided equally among the partner charities of CHS TV’s Ramadan Family Commitment initiative, helping families and victims affected by Covid-19 worldwide, as well as people in refugee camps.
Mr Choudhury’s son Atique Choudhury said his father was determined to help those in need, "especially families of those who have lost loved ones due to the deadly virus”.
When he was made an OBE in October, Mr Choudhury said: “I feel proud they have honoured me for the efforts I have done. I thank everybody from the bottom of my heart.”

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
