A gang of burglars reportedly tunnelled their way into a high-end jewellery shop in central London last weekend, making off with a “quantity” of jewels. London’s Metropolitan Police have started an investigation into the burglary, which is being compared to the 2015 Hatton Garden raid, when thieves stole millions of pounds of jewels from an underground vault in central London. The burglary was made into a film starring Ray Winstone. Officers were called to George Attenborough & Son jewellers on Fleet Street at 2am on Monday. The burglary could have taken place at any point over the weekend, when the shop was closed. Police said a “quantity of jewellery” was taken but did not disclose details of what was stolen. Some items advertised on George Attenborough & Son’s website sell for tens of thousands of pounds, including a diamond ring priced at £99,999 (Dh485,100). British tabloid <em>The Sun</em> reported that the burglars broke in using a hidden passageway linking the jewellery store with a bookmakers next door. The newspaper said that the burglars could have spent two days inside after drilling a hole in the wall to gain access to the jewellery shop building. The incident took place in the same weekend that thousands of runners took to the streets to take part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon on Sunday nearby to the jewellery shop. Police said no arrests have been made.
